Silica fume has been developed into a new type of bioceramic material.

07 Nov,2023

Recently, Russian scientists synthesized a novel bioactive ceramic material using synthetic wollastonite (silicate grade) as the matrix. They added two types of pore-forming additives at different stages of material synthesis, creating an unprecedented new type of bioactive ceramic material and an artificial bone matrix that is structurally and functionally similar to bone materials. The developed materials have reached an advanced level of bioceramics and meet all the requirements of modern medicine.

There are various methods for the artificial synthesis of wollastonite, with the sintering method and melting method commonly used in industrial production. Synthetic wollastonite is characterized by high purity, good crystallinity, and high whiteness, which has garnered increasing attention and importance, and its applications are very broad.

For example, high-purity wollastonite prepared by the roasting method can be used as a precursor powder material for bioactive ceramics. The wollastonite ceramic obtained after high-temperature roasting exhibits high strength, good bioactivity, and is harmless to the human body. This type of bio-ceramic can quickly form a carbonated hydroxyapatite layer on its surface during in vitro bioactivity evaluation, facilitating the integration of tissues and blood vessels after implantation into the human body. This enhances the bonding strength between the implanted material and surrounding tissue, accelerates tissue reconstruction, and promotes wound healing. Bioactive ceramics can be used for the repair of hard tissues in the human body (bones, teeth).
