Silicon Carbide (SiC), also known as corundum, is a hard, high-melting-point compound semiconductor material with the chemical formula SiC. It is composed of silicon and carbon and possesses excellent physicochemical properties, including high strength, high hardness, high-temperature resistance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and good thermal conductivity.

 

Characteristics of Silicon Carbide:

1. Extremely high hardness: Silicon carbide is one of the hardest materials, second only to diamond, with a Mohs hardness of 9.0-9.5.

2. Good thermal stability: With a melting point of about 2700°C, it maintains good mechanical strength and chemical stability at high temperatures.

3. Strong thermal conductivity: Its thermal conductivity is far superior to most metals and ceramic materials, facilitating rapid heat dissipation.

4. Corrosion resistance: It has high chemical inertness in oxidizing environments and is not easily corroded by most acids and bases.

5. Electrical performance: As a semiconductor material, silicon carbide has excellent power electronic performance, making it suitable for the manufacture of high-frequency, high-temperature, and high-power devices.

 

Application industries:

• Abrasive industry: Widely used as a grinding and polishing material in precision machining.

• Metallurgical industry: Used as a refractory material in steelmaking, casting, and other fields.

1. Wear resistance: The high hardness and wear resistance of silicon carbide give brake pads containing its components a longer service life, reducing the need for frequent replacements.

2. Thermal stability: Under high-speed and heavy-load conditions, silicon carbide brake pads can effectively resist the thermal degradation effects caused by high temperatures, maintaining stable friction performance and providing reliable braking effects.

3. Weight reduction and heat dissipation: Brake discs or pads made from silicon carbide composites are lighter than traditional metal brake components and have superior thermal conductivity, allowing for rapid dissipation of heat generated during braking, preventing overheating and damage to brake components.

4. Improved braking performance: Silicon carbide brake pads can provide a higher coefficient of friction, especially in extreme environments, which helps shorten braking distances and enhance driving safety.

In high-end racing cars, high-performance sports cars, and some aircraft braking systems, silicon carbide is often combined with composite materials such as carbon fiber to form carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide brake pads or discs. This material not only improves braking efficiency but also greatly enhances the durability and reliability of the braking system.
