The basic chemical composition of bentonite is (Na,Ca)₀.₃(Al,Mg)₂[(OH)₄Si₄O₁₀]•nH₂O, and it has the following main characteristics:

Main characteristics of bentonite:

1. Hygroscopicity: It can absorb several times or even dozens of times its own weight in moisture, significantly increasing in volume after absorbing water.

2. Dispersibility and suspension: It disperses in water to form a colloidal solution, exhibiting good suspension properties.

3. Thixotropy and lubricity: It flows under shear stress and can regain its viscosity after the stress is removed, providing a certain degree of lubrication.

4. Cation exchange capacity: The layers of montmorillonite carry a negative charge, allowing it to adsorb cations for ion exchange reactions.

5. Good plasticity and moldability: It is relatively hard in a dry state but becomes soft and easy to shape when wet.

Application industries:

• Chemical coatings: Used as a thickener, suspending agent, thixotropic agent, and anti-settling agent.
