The physical properties of mica mainly depend on the size of the mica crystals, which are determined by cleavage and hardness, as well as the color transparency and elasticity of the mica. Industrial mica often appears in a stacked or booklet-like crystalline form, with varying crystal sizes and thicknesses ranging from a few millimeters to several centimeters. Generally, as long as the crystal area is greater than or equal to 4 cm², it has direct utilization value. Of course, the larger the crystal area, the higher the value. The splitting performance of mica is determined by its cleavage and hardness. The crystal structure of mica provides a set of very complete basal cleavage, which is an important property for the technical processing and splitting of industrial mica. Theoretically, muscovite can be split to about 10, while phlogopite can be split to about 5-10. Therefore, muscovite and phlogopite can be split into flat sheets of any thickness according to industrial requirements to meet the needs of the electrical and electronic industries. Mica has relatively low hardness, with muscovite rated at 2-2.5, magnesium silicate muscovite at 2.37, and phlogopite at 2.78-2.85. The greater the hardness of mica, the more difficult it is to split.

Muscovite has a glassy luster and is generally colorless and transparent; phlogopite has a metallic luster and semi-metallic luster, commonly found in gold, brown, and light green colors with poorer transparency. Both muscovite and phlogopite have good electrical and mechanical properties, excellent heat resistance, chemical stability, and corona resistance. Both types of mica can be processed into soft and elastic sheets with a thickness of 0.01 to 0.03 millimeters. Muscovite has better electrical performance than phlogopite, but phlogopite is softer and has better heat resistance than muscovite.
