Striking calcite can produce many square fragments, hence the name calcite. The color of calcite varies due to the impurities it contains, such as light yellow, light red, and brownish-black when it contains iron and manganese, but it is generally white or colorless. Colorless and transparent calcite is also known as Iceland spar (named after its abundant production in Iceland), and this type of calcite has a wonderful characteristic: objects viewed through it appear as double images, making Iceland spar an important optical material.
