Copper fiber is a type of metal fiber material based on copper, usually made from pure copper or copper containing specific alloy elements through special processes into continuous fibers or short fibers. This fiber has excellent electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and good mechanical properties, including high strength, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance.
In the application of brake pads, copper fiber plays an important role, specifically including the following functions:
1. Enhanced friction performance:
• Copper fiber can improve the friction coefficient of brake pads, especially in humid environments, where the good thermal conductivity of copper helps to quickly dissipate heat, thus maintaining stable friction and improving brake response speed and effectiveness.
2. Wear resistance and self-lubrication:
• Copper fiber can significantly enhance the wear resistance of brake pads. Its presence can create small friction points, reducing direct metal-to-metal contact, providing a certain degree of self-lubrication, and reducing wear and noise.
3. Heat dissipation effect:
• A large amount of heat is generated during braking, and copper fiber has extremely high thermal conductivity, which can quickly dissipate the heat generated by friction into the air, effectively avoiding the problem of thermal fade caused by overheating of the brake pads, ensuring the continuous and effective operation of the braking system.
4. Reducing environmental pollution:
• Although copper fiber has been widely used in brake pads in the past, with increasing environmental protection requirements, especially in Europe and North America, the use of copper in brake pads has gradually decreased or even been restricted in recent years due to its potential environmental impact during brake wear (such as being harmful to aquatic life when entering water bodies).
5. Composite material modification:
• Copper fiber can be combined with other materials (such as graphite, ceramic particles, resins, etc.) to create high-performance composite brake pad materials. These composites can reduce wear on the brake disc while ensuring braking performance and optimizing the overall performance of the brake pads.
Although copper fiber was widely used in brake pad manufacturing in the past, due to environmental considerations and technological advancements, the market now more often uses alternative materials that are copper-free or have low copper content to achieve similar effects, such as ceramic fibers, carbon fibers, and other composite materials.
