Steel wool, also known as metal fiber wool or metal grinding wool, is a fibrous material made from high-quality steel through special processes such as drawing, cutting, and rounding. Its main characteristics are high strength, good wear resistance, high-temperature resistance, excellent thermal conductivity, and good flexibility and compressibility.
In brake pads, steel wool is widely used as an important reinforcement and wear-resistant material. Its specific functions are as follows:
1. Improve wear resistance: Due to the wear-resistant properties of steel wool itself, adding it to the brake pad material can significantly enhance the wear resistance of the brake pads and extend their service life.
2. Improve friction performance: Steel wool can improve the friction coefficient between the brake pads and the brake disc, making braking more responsive and effective, thus enhancing braking performance.
3. Reduce thermal fade: A large amount of heat is generated during braking, and steel wool has good thermal conductivity, which helps to quickly disperse and dissipate the heat inside the brake pads, thereby reducing the phenomenon of brake performance degradation due to high temperatures (i.e., thermal fade).
4. Enhance mechanical strength: Steel wool can improve the overall mechanical strength and structural stability of the brake pads, preventing breakage or damage during high-intensity braking or prolonged continuous braking.
It is important to note that the amount of steel wool added to the brake pads needs to be precisely controlled; too much may increase brake noise, while too little may not fully realize its reinforcement and wear-resistant effects. Additionally, it is necessary to combine other materials such as resins and ceramics for scientific formulation design to ensure the overall performance of the brake pads.
