Refined iron ore is a type of iron ore that has been processed and purified, with a high iron content, mainly including magnetite (Fe₃O₄) and hematite (Fe₂O₃), along with a small amount of impurities. Refined iron ore is the primary raw material in the steel industry, which is reduced at high temperatures to produce pig iron or directly smelted into steel.
In the application of brake pads, refined iron ore and its products, such as refined iron ore powder, have the following functions:
1. Friction material: Refined iron ore powder is used as a component of friction materials to increase the friction coefficient of brake pads. During braking, frictional force is generated between the brake pads and the brake disc, and refined iron ore powder, due to its moderate hardness and stable friction performance, can effectively convert into the braking force required.
2. Wear resistance: Refined iron ore has good wear resistance, and when added to the brake pad formulation, it can enhance the wear resistance of the brake pads, extending their service life.
3. Thermal stability: Refined iron ore has a certain degree of thermal stability at high temperatures, which helps reduce the thermal degradation phenomenon caused by continuous friction during braking, maintaining the durability and stability of braking performance.
4. Cost considerations: As a relatively common mineral resource, refined iron ore is more cost-effective compared to some rare and expensive friction materials, making it one of the more cost-effective raw materials for brake pads.
5. Customization performance: According to the different requirements of braking systems, refined iron ore can be combined with other materials (such as copper powder, ceramic particles, graphite, resin, etc.) to formulate brake pads with different performance characteristics, adapting to the needs of various vehicle models, road conditions, and driving styles.
