Dolomite is a common carbonate mineral with the chemical formula CaMg(CO₃)₂, primarily composed of calcium, magnesium, and carbonate ions. Its crystal structure belongs to the trigonal system, and the common crystal form is rhombohedral, with crystal faces often exhibiting a curved saddle shape. The color of dolomite ranges from pure white to gray, yellow, green, etc., depending on the type and amount of impurities present. The Mohs hardness of dolomite is approximately between 3.5 and 4, with a relative density of about 2.8 to 2.9.
Dolomite has the following characteristics:
Chemical stability: It has good resistance to most acid and alkaline solutions at room temperature, but it will slowly fizz when encountering cold dilute hydrochloric acid.
Thermal stability: It decomposes when heated to 700-900℃, producing calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, and carbon dioxide.
